Big Timber Montana

Historic Sweet Grass County is the home of Big Timber, Montana. Surrounded by the Yellowstone and Boulder rivers, this laid back Montana Superhost town is the place Lewis and Clark called "Rivers Across". To the north of Big Timber lies the majestic Crazy Mountains, and to the south the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness and the Gallatin National Forest.

The streets of Big Timber retain the historic feel of long ago and offer a great variety of arts, shopping, and dining establishments, including a 1930's soda fountain. One of our favorite locals, The Grand Hotel, which is a registered historical building, offers fine dining, Victorian guest rooms, an authentic western Bar and was given an Award of Excellence by Wine Spectator magazine.

If appeasing your historic curiosity is of interest, you can't find a better historic presentation of the area than the Crazy Mountain Museum. The museum, which is located just one mile from the west exit of I-90, is a delightful look into the past of Big Timber and the surrouding towns of Melville, Greycliff and McLeod.

Sweet Grass County is the perfect location for an abundance of outdoor activity including hiking, hunting, horseback riding, fishing, backpacking, river rafting and camping. Big Timber and Sweet Grass County are also home to an array of annual events including our annual rodeo Sweet Grass Fest, Sweet Grass County Fair, Cutting Horse Competitions, Yellowstone River Boat Float, Bull-a-Rama, Big Timber Rodeo and mush, much more.
